Who the rule covers
The Thai MFA and Immigration Bureau guidance, checked 1 August 2026, applies the health-evidence rule to the first O-A application and to an extension based on O-A status. O-A is a distinct route; this page does not generalise its insurance rule to every retirement status.
Coverage amount and period
The Thai MFA and Immigration Bureau guidance, checked 1 August 2026, requires coverage for general medical expenses, including COVID-19 treatment, of at least USD 100,000 or THB 3,000,000. The policy or qualifying welfare evidence must cover the period of stay, up to the O-A stay period stated by the issuing authority.
This is a total medical-expense threshold. The current guidance replaced the older split thresholds for outpatient and inpatient benefits. Pages still presenting only the older split amounts should not be used as the current first-application rule.
Thai and foreign policies
- Thai policy: the Royal Thai Embassy in Madrid says to submit a copy of the policy showing the required coverage and stay period.
- Foreign policy: official guidance accepts qualifying overseas insurance, but requires the prescribed foreign-insurance certificate signed by the authorised insurer or public organisation.
- Foreign government welfare: the Thai MFA guidance recognises qualifying foreign government welfare with the required coverage and authentication.
Authentication requirements for a foreign certificate can depend on the issuing country and responsible Thai mission. Use that mission's current O-A checklist before purchase or submission.
If an insurer refuses coverage
The Thai MFA guidance, checked 1 August 2026, provides a limited fallback where insurance is refused in whole or in part. It requires evidence of the refusal and qualifying deposits, other insurance, or a combination totalling at least THB 3,000,000 under Immigration's criteria. The Royal Thai Embassy Madrid page, also checked 1 August 2026, says its bank-deposit alternative must have been maintained for the previous 2 months and is separate from the ordinary O-A financial evidence.
This is not a general self-insurance election. The refusal documentation and the exact post-specific checklist matter.
Use the official certificate and insurer portal
The Thailand General Insurance Association's official long-stay portal publishes the O-A guidance, participating Thai-company route, and foreign insurance certificate. The portal states that an overseas certificate must be signed by an authorised person of the insurer or public organisation.
This review did not verify individual insurer ages, premiums, exclusions, direct-billing hospitals, or acceptance outcomes. Those commercial details have therefore been removed rather than presented as visa rules.
Extension evidence
The official Immigration guideline describes the amended insurance criteria for both first application and extension. Evidence must remain valid for the stay period being requested. This page does not promise that a missing or expired policy can be corrected the same day at a local office.
