There is no universal foreigner checklist
Verified 1 August 2026. The Bank of Thailand permits non-residents to hold specified Thai-baht and foreign-currency accounts, but a bank still applies its own product rules, customer due diligence and risk controls. A visa category alone does not guarantee approval.
The official Bank of Thailand exchange-control rules describe non-resident baht accounts, including a Non-resident Baht Account for general purposes. The bank decides which product is available to the applicant and what evidence it needs.
Published bank examples
| Official page | Published requirement as of 25 July 2026 | Why it is not universal |
|---|---|---|
| SCB savings account | As published on the live English product page and checked on 1 August 2026, the general savings account opens with at least THB 500. For a foreign applicant, its identity-verification section specifies a passport and work permit. | This is SCB's published checklist for this named product, not a rule for every bank or foreign applicant. |
| Bangkok Bank foreign-currency deposit account for non-residents | As checked on 1 August 2026, the page publishes a minimum initial deposit of USD 1,000 or equivalent. Its live document section directs applicants to a participating branch rather than displaying the former passport checklist. | This is a foreign-currency account, not a general Thai-baht savings-account rule. |
The confirmed figure is a dated example from one official product page, not a ranking or promise that a branch will open an account.
Documents and branch variation
A bank may ask for identity, immigration status, Thai address, tax-residence information, source of funds, contact details or a work-related document, depending on the product and its due-diligence assessment. The exact list is not standardised across banks or branches.
Before visiting, obtain the current checklist from the chosen bank and name the exact account product. If an application is declined, only the bank can explain whether another product or additional evidence is available. This guide does not publish branch workarounds, dress advice or paid account-opening services.
Using an account for a retirement extension
Opening an account and satisfying Immigration's financial evidence are separate processes. As published by Immigration and checked on 1 August 2026, the retirement-extension criteria include the THB 800,000 deposit route: the funds must have been in a Thai bank for at least two months before the application, remain for at least three months after permission, and then not fall below THB 400,000. See the Non-O retirement guide for the official source and other routes.
The bank letter, statement period and transaction evidence requested by an Immigration office can vary. The national and provincial Immigration material reviewed on 1 August 2026 does not impose one universal bank transaction code for this deposit route. The deciding Immigration office specifies the evidence it accepts.
Cards, apps and transfer fees
Debit-card fees, ATM charges, mobile-app access and incoming-transfer details are bank- and product-specific. They may change without an immigration rule change. This page therefore does not publish a blended fee range. Use the current tariff and terms for the exact account and card.
The Bank of Thailand's English and Thai financial-threat and customer-profiling material, checked on 1 August 2026, shows that banks apply KYC, due-diligence and risk controls and may request additional evidence. It does not require every bank to approve the same customer profile.
What changed in this verification
24 July 2026: removed bank rankings, branch endorsements, tourist and DTV workarounds, agent fees, undated card and ATM charges, and the claim that one transfer code is universally required; added official Bank of Thailand context and dated bank examples. 1 August 2026: re-verified the Bank of Thailand and Immigration rules, retained Bangkok Bank's current FCD initial deposit, and restored SCB's current general-savings initial deposit and foreign-applicant identity documents after the live page exposed them again.
FAQ
Can a tourist open a Thai bank account?
There is no central rule promising approval or imposing one universal prohibition. As checked on 1 August 2026, the bank's current product criteria and customer-due-diligence decision control. Ask the bank about a named product and rely on its written checklist.
What are the retirement deposit periods?
As published by Immigration and checked on 1 August 2026, the THB 800,000 route requires at least two months before application, at least three months after permission, and a balance not below THB 400,000 thereafter. The office can specify the documents used to prove this.
Is one bank or Pattaya branch guaranteed to accept foreigners?
No. Product criteria and due-diligence decisions vary. This guide does not rank branches or treat informal acceptance reports as an official rule.
