As of 25 July 2026, official mission pages support three lanes: workcation, listed Thai activities, and spouse or dependent children. Applicants show at least THB 500,000 in financial evidence, but statement periods, accepted evidence, fees, jurisdiction and processing times differ by embassy. There is no universal three-month seasoning rule.
What the DTV actually is
The Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh’s official DTV page states that the visa is valid for 5 years with multiple entries and permits up to 180 days per entry. It also states that one extension of no more than 180 days may be requested for an entry, after which the holder must depart and may re-enter while the visa remains valid. These validity and stay figures were re-verified 25 July 2026.
An extension is an Immigration Bureau decision, not an automatic second stay. The DTV is not permanent residence and is not a Thai work permit. The Budapest embassy page, updated 11 February 2026, says holders may not work for Thai companies or perform freelance work for Thai clients.
Who qualifies — the 3 lanes
Official mission pages currently publish three application categories:
Lane 1 — Workcation / Remote work
Digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers can apply with evidence matching their status. As of 25 July 2026, Budapest lists a foreign employment certificate or contract plus remote-work confirmation for employees, company and tax records for business owners, or a professional portfolio for freelancers. An embassy can request more evidence; a company registration alone is not a guaranteed approval.
Lane 2 — Soft power activity
The official Phnom Penh and Budapest pages list activities including:
- Muay Thai or other sports training
- Thai culinary training
- Medical treatment
- Seminars and music festivals
As of 25 July 2026, Phnom Penh asks for confirmation of the activity or a hospital appointment. Budapest additionally says its cultural activity should last at least 6 months. That duration is a Budapest requirement, not a published universal DTV rule. The mission processing the application decides whether the provider and evidence are sufficient.
Lane 3 — Dependents
As of 25 July 2026, official mission pages list the spouse and dependent children of a DTV holder. Helsinki and Los Angeles specify children under 20; relationship evidence can include a marriage, birth or adoption certificate. Each person files for a visa and pays the fee set by the mission handling that application.
THB 500,000 evidence: the rule and the variation
As of 25 July 2026, official DTV pages require financial evidence of at least THB 500,000 or the mission’s stated currency equivalent. The evidence window is not universal:
- Budapest asks for a 6-month official bank statement and says crypto or other investment statements are not accepted.
- Savannakhet, updated 10 March 2026, refers to bank statements covering the past 3 months or a sponsor letter, as applicable.
- Los Angeles, updated 3 December 2025, asks for a recent savings or checking statement with the required ending balance.
Do not turn one mission’s checklist into a worldwide rule. Budapest expressly rejects crypto and investment statements; another mission may word its acceptable evidence differently. Use the current checklist for the embassy with jurisdiction over the applicant’s location.

There is no single worldwide DTV fee or processing promise. Currency, payment method, translations, jurisdiction and lead time are mission-specific. Kuala Lumpur’s page, updated 17 July 2026, recommends filing at least 15 working days before travel and warns that incomplete files delay processing.
Application — step by step
Identify the mission with jurisdiction
Use the embassy or consulate serving the applicant’s current residence or location. As of 25 July 2026, official pages such as Budapest and Seoul require proof that the applicant is physically present or resident within their jurisdiction.
Open that mission’s current checklist
Confirm the fee, financial-evidence window, purpose documents, translation rules and e-Visa procedure on the same official mission page. Do not combine requirements from different embassies into a homemade checklist.
Document the chosen lane
Provide foreign employment or freelance evidence for workcation, activity or medical confirmation for the activity lane, or civil-status documents for a dependant. The mission may request additional material.
Submit through the stated channel
Where the mission uses e-Visa, apply through the official Thai e-Visa portal. A submitted application does not guarantee issuance, and fees are generally non-refundable.
Check the permission stamped on entry
The visa validity and the admitted-until date are different. As of 25 July 2026, the official DTV rule is up to 180 days per entry; the immigration officer’s entry record controls the actual admitted stay.
Use Immigration’s current reporting systems
Address reporting and extension questions are separate from visa issuance. Use the official TM30 portal, the official TM47 guide, and Immigration Bureau instructions applicable at the time.
The tax question — what most nomads get wrong
A DTV does not itself determine tax residence, income source, assessability or treaty relief. Day counts and remittances can matter, but the result depends on the facts and current Revenue Department rules. As of 25 July 2026, the DTV is not one of the LTR categories named in the BOI’s published LTR tax benefits. That does not mean every DTV holder owes tax; it means no DTV-specific LTR exemption should be assumed. Read the separately verified LTR guide →
DTV vs the alternatives
The DTV answers a different purpose from Thai employment, retirement, education or investment programmes. Compare only against a page that has been verified for the same date and facts. DTV workcation does not replace Non-B plus work permission for a Thai job; the Non-ED and DTV activity lane use different official evidence; and LTR has BOI qualification criteria rather than a simple income-only test.

Five avoidable DTV errors
- Calling THB 500,000 “three-month seasoning” everywhere. As of 25 July 2026, published windows range from a recent ending balance to 3 or 6 months.
- Using a mission outside its jurisdiction. Current-location or residence evidence is commonly required.
- Treating any gym or course as automatically sufficient. The mission decides whether the activity and provider evidence support the application.
- Assuming the visa validity is the admitted stay. Check the entry record and permitted-until date every time.
- Using workcation for Thai-market work. Budapest’s current official guidance excludes Thai-company employment and Thai-client freelance work.

How long can a DTV holder stay per entry?
As of 25 July 2026, per the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, up to 180 days per entry. One extension of no more than 180 days may be requested from Immigration for that entry; approval is not automatic.
Can a DTV holder work?

There is no universal time. As of 25 July 2026, Kuala Lumpur advises applying at least 15 working days before travel; other missions publish different service standards or none.
Can a DTV be issued inside Thailand?
Official DTV applications are handled by Royal Thai embassies and consulates, commonly through e-Visa. For an in-country immigration question, ask the Immigration Bureau; this page found no official nationwide conversion route to promise.
Does DTV status settle Thai tax?
No. Visa status, day count, income source, remittance and treaty relief are separate tax questions.
