As of 25 July 2026, the O-A route is for eligible applicants aged 50 or older applying through a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the country of nationality or residence. Current official sources publish a 1-year multiple-entry visa, financial evidence of THB 800,000, THB 65,000 monthly income or the permitted combination, and medical insurance of at least USD 100,000 or THB 3,000,000 per policy year.
O-A is not the standard Non-O route
O-A is an embassy-issued long-stay category. The standard retirement Non-O route can involve a 90-day visa/status change and annual extensions inside Thailand. The categories share age and financial thresholds but do not share every document or insurance rule. The visa category printed in the passport matters.
The O-A rules were re-checked on 25 July 2026 against a Royal Thai Embassy page published 6 February 2026, the official Immigration O-A insurance guideline and the governing Royal Gazette extension criterion. No later effective amendment changing the core thresholds was found.
Published eligibility
- Age 50 or older on the application date.
- Nationality or legal residence within the jurisdiction of the mission handling the application.
- No intention to work in Thailand; official mission pages state employment is prohibited.
- Financial evidence of at least THB 800,000, income of at least THB 65,000 a month, or deposit plus annual income totalling at least THB 800,000, as accepted by the mission.
- Medical insurance for the stay with at least USD 100,000 or THB 3,000,000 overall cover per policy year, including the certificate format required for a foreign policy.
- A police-clearance certificate and a medical certificate addressing the prohibited diseases in the applicable form.
Insurance: the current O-A baseline
As verified 1 August 2026, current embassy pages and Immigration's guideline use the USD 100,000/THB 3,000,000 baseline for a new O-A application. A Thai policy can be checked against the official long-stay insurance portal. A foreign policy normally requires the prescribed Foreign Insurance Certificate signed and stamped by the insurer, plus any legalisation required by the mission.
For an in-country extension based on an O-A entry, the Royal Gazette criterion requires qualifying insurance or foreign government welfare throughout the permitted stay. The permission is limited to the coverage period and no more than 1 year at a time.
The Royal Gazette also publishes a narrow alternative where insurers reject all or part of the required cover: evidence of rejection plus at least THB 3,000,000 in a Thai commercial bank for at least 2 months, or qualifying other insurance plus deposit totalling at least THB 3,000,000. This is not a general opt-out; the handling office decides whether the rejection and evidence meet the criterion.
Documents vary by mission
The usual official categories are passport, photograph, proof of residence in the mission's jurisdiction, financial evidence, medical certificate, police clearance, insurance policy and insurance certificate. The details are not universal:
- As checked 25 July 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu publishes a passport-validity requirement of more than 18 months; the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha publishes more than 6 months on the travel date.
- Some missions require certificates issued within 3 months and local legalisation; others describe different upload or notarisation steps.
- The Budapest page published in February 2026 requests travel-history pages for the past 12 months and a photograph of the applicant holding the passport biodata page.
These are named variations, not a blended worldwide checklist. The mission with jurisdiction over the applicant's residence controls the live e-Visa upload list.
Fees also vary
There is no reliable universal O-A fee in one currency. As checked 25 July 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in Rome publishes EUR 175 for the 1-year multiple-entry O-A, while the Royal Thai Embassy in Tehran publishes EUR 170. Other missions quote their own local-currency amount. The fee displayed by the responsible mission at filing controls.
Validity and permission to stay
Official mission pages checked 25 July 2026 describe the visa as multiple-entry and valid for 1 year, with a stay of no more than 1 year per qualifying admission. The visa-validity date and the permission-to-stay date are different dates and must both be read from the passport.
The previous page promoted a “last-day-entry trick.” That advice-like framing was removed. Border admission, the length of the new stamp and insurance sufficiency are official decisions. The actual visa, insurance and entry dates control; no extension of nearly 2 years is assumed.
Extending inside Thailand
An O-A permission can be extended inside Thailand if the holder meets the current retirement-extension criteria. That filing is not automatically a conversion to standard Non-O. The O-A-specific insurance condition continues to matter. For the bank route, the Royal Gazette criterion checked 25 July 2026 requires at least THB 800,000 in a Thai commercial bank for at least 2 months before filing and 3 months after approval, after which the balance must not fall below THB 400,000.
The extension fee is published in Immigration service handbooks as THB 1,900 as of 25 July 2026. The local office controls bank-letter timing, copies, insurance verification and appointment procedures.
Reporting and travel
- 90-day reporting: a holder who remains in Thailand for more than 90 consecutive days must report the address. Immigration's online guide, checked 25 July 2026, opens online filing within the 15 days before the due date.
- Accommodation notification: TM.30/Section 38 is separate and depends on the accommodation facts.
- After visa validity expires: a valid re-entry permit is normally needed to preserve an extension when leaving Thailand.
- Work: O-A mission pages state that employment is prohibited.
Processing time
No single official global processing time was found on 25 July 2026. E-Visa review depends on the responsible mission, the completeness of police/medical/insurance documents and any additional-document request. The old 1-to-6-week promise and private-market preparation estimates were removed.
What changed on this review
- Removed the last-day-entry recommendation and unsupported private insurance-price ranges.
- Corrected the suggestion that an in-country O-A extension automatically becomes Non-O.
- Named passport, fee and upload variations rather than presenting one worldwide list.
- Retained the current THB 3,000,000/USD 100,000 insurance baseline with official sources and date.

Can O-A be applied for in Pattaya?
The initial O-A visa is issued abroad by the Royal Thai mission with jurisdiction over the applicant's nationality or residence. In Thailand, an eligible O-A holder applies to extend the existing permission, subject to the O-A insurance rule.
Does a foreign policy work?
It may, if it meets the coverage rule and the insurer completes the prescribed Foreign Insurance Certificate; the responsible mission or Immigration office decides whether the policy and legalisation are sufficient.
Does an O-A extension become standard Non-O?
No automatic conversion is published. The extension is assessed from the existing category, and the O-A insurance criterion continues to apply.
Is the visa fee the same everywhere?
No. Mission fees are quoted locally; Rome and Tehran already differ in the official pages checked 25 July 2026.
