What Non-ED actually is
The Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest, updated 11 February 2026, lists ordinary Non-ED for full-time education below bachelor’s level, short training or exchange, and internship or curricular training. It lists ED Plus separately for a full-time bachelor’s degree or higher programme that leads to a degree.
Non-ED is permission to enter and stay for the approved education purpose; it does not itself grant permission to work. If a student wants to take employment, the Department of Employment and Immigration Bureau must confirm the separate route before work starts.
Education purposes differ by mission
Budapest currently publishes ordinary Non-ED purposes for below-degree full-time education, short training or exchange, and curricular internship. Its ED Plus route covers degree study at bachelor’s level or above. Kuala Lumpur’s page, updated 17 July 2026, currently lists elementary-to-secondary study, vocational or technical study below bachelor’s level, and religious study. The Thai Savannakhet checklist, updated 10 March 2026, describes education or study and requires institution evidence. A course advertised locally does not automatically fit the issuing mission’s category.
Private-institution files can require approval from the Ministry of Education or another designated authority, the institution’s registration certificate, acceptance and recommendation letters, and signed or sealed school records. Government school, university, religious and internship files have different evidence.
The Office of the Private Education Commission’s official school search can be used to check licensed private schools. A search result does not by itself guarantee that a particular course supports Non-ED or that a mission will accept the file. The institution should identify the supervising authority and provide the exact current documents.

School tuition is commercial and varies by provider and course. This session found no official Pattaya-wide price range, so the former school-fee estimates have been removed. Visa fees are set in local currency by the processing mission; extension and re-entry charges must be checked with Immigration for the actual application.
Application — step by step
Confirm Non-ED or ED Plus
Match the real programme and level to the mission’s published purpose. ED Plus is not simply a longer ordinary ED visa.
Verify the institution and authority
Check the institution’s licence where possible and ask which Ministry of Education or designated-authority approval supports the foreign student.
Use the processing mission’s checklist
Institution letters, authority approvals, financial evidence, current-location proof, translations and fees vary. Kuala Lumpur and Budapest do not publish identical lists.
Apply through the official channel
Where directed, use Thai e-Visa. The embassy may ask for additional documents and may reject an unsupported application.
Check the admitted stay
Budapest states ordinary Non-ED permits up to 90 days from entry. The entry record, not a school sales description, controls the admitted-until date.
Handle extensions with the institution and Immigration
Budapest states that ordinary Non-ED extensions are solely at the immigration officer’s discretion. ED Plus has separate institution-led extension provisions. Ask the institution and the responsible immigration office for the current checklist.
Non-ED vs alternatives
Non-ED is for the education purpose accepted by the mission. ED Plus is for qualifying degree study. A DTV activity application is a different visa with different evidence; a Non-B employment application is not a study substitute. No route should be chosen merely as a “fallback” when the applicant does not genuinely meet its purpose.
Five avoidable education-visa errors
- Assuming any course qualifies. The mission’s visa purpose and authority approval matter.
- Relying only on a school’s marketing. Check the OPEC register and ask for the current approval documents.
- Using a universal attendance rule. Attendance and reporting conditions depend on the institution and programme; do not publish a single nationwide percentage without a current official basis.
- Assuming a one-year extension. Ordinary Non-ED extensions are discretionary and category-specific.
- Working because study status is valid. Non-ED does not itself grant work permission.

Can the visa holder work?
The education visa alone does not grant work permission. Ask the Department of Employment and Immigration Bureau about any proposed employment.
How long does processing take?
There is no universal time. Kuala Lumpur advises filing at least 15 working days before travel and warns that missing or unclear documents cause delays.
