The opportunity
English teaching remains the most common formal employment pathway for foreigners in Pattaya. The city hosts a substantial international school cluster — Bangkok Pattaya International School (BPIS), St Andrews International School, Regents International School, The Lighthouse International School, and Stamford International School all employ native-speaker or near-native teachers. Below the international school tier, dozens of private bilingual schools, language centres (ECC Thailand, Wall Street English, Berlitz), and private tutoring agencies operate in Pattaya and Jomtien. The MOE-pathway work permit system is well-established here, and experienced PGCE or state-certified teachers with degrees in relevant subjects can build stable long-term careers.
Pathway 1 — Non-B + FET/MOE work permit (the standard legal route)
Teaching at any Thai-registered school or language centre requires a Non-B Visa and either a Ministry of Education (MOE) work permit or a Foreign Expert Teacher (FET) permit. The school is your sponsor: they provide the appointment letter, contract, and document list for your Non-B application at a Thai embassy abroad. Your degree certificate must be apostilled (see Apostille) and the MOE requires a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, state teaching licence) for the formal work permit track — TEFL alone is insufficient for international school-level positions. Language centres may accept TEFL with a degree for centre-specific work permit categories.
- Your MOE/FET work permit is school-specific — teaching at a second school part-time requires a second work permit application.
- International schools conduct recruitment October–January for August start positions; smaller schools recruit year-round.
- Criminal background checks (apostilled) are required by all reputable schools and are standard MOE permit documentation.
Pathway 2 — DTV (online teaching to foreign students)
The DTV is legally applicable to teachers conducting online lessons for foreign-registered platforms or foreign clients — an English teacher providing VIPKid, iTutorGroup, or Cambly lessons to overseas students from a Pattaya base is working for foreign companies, not Thai ones. This structure does not require a work permit. The key boundary: if students are in Thailand or if the employer is a Thai-registered entity, Non-B + WP10 is required regardless of the delivery method (online or in-person).
Pathway 3 — LTR Highly-Skilled Professional
Senior academic staff — principal, curriculum director, head of department at large international schools — occasionally meet the LTR Highly-Skilled $80,000/year income threshold. At this level, LTR + RD 743 offers 10 years of stability versus annual Non-B renewals. Realistically, this pathway applies to fewer than 5% of teaching positions in Pattaya.
Tax engineering
Teachers employed by Thai schools pay Thai personal income tax on Thai-source salary. Standard deductions apply: employment income deduction (50% up to ฿100,000), personal allowance (฿60,000), and spouse/dependent allowances. Teachers supplementing Thai salary with foreign-platform online income (VIPKid, etc.) should keep that foreign income clearly separated — if they spend under 180 days in Thailand in any year (possible for teachers who travel heavily during school breaks), the foreign income is not Thai-assessable for that year.
Pattaya scene
Teaching in Pattaya offers quality-of-life advantages over Bangkok: lower traffic, beach proximity, and lower accommodation costs. BPIS, St Andrews, and Regents pay salaries of ฿60,000–฿120,000/month for experienced qualified teachers, with housing allowance or accommodation packages at the upper end. Smaller bilingual schools and language centres pay ฿30,000–฿55,000/month. TEFL certification training itself is available in Pattaya — several accredited providers (CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL) offer courses that simultaneously prepare candidates and produce the initial qualification for entry-level positions.
