DTV: the published workcation route
The MFA's official DTV summary names digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers as eligible applicants. As verified on 1 August 2026, it publishes all of the following:
- Financial evidence: at least 500,000 THB, with examples including bank statements, payslips or a sponsorship letter.
- Purpose evidence: an overseas employment contract or employment certificate, or a professional portfolio showing digital-nomad, remote-worker, foreign-talent or freelancer status.
- Validity: 5 years, multiple entry.
- Stay: up to 180 days per entry, with one extension not exceeding a further 180 days per entry.
- Published visa fee: 10,000 THB.
The financial evidence is not published as a substitute for the workcation evidence; the old page's “savings OR remote income” formulation was wrong. Overseas missions charge in local currency and can require different statement periods, residence evidence, translations or extra documents. The responsible Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate controls the application checklist and fee.
What DTV does not settle by itself
DTV identifies a visa purpose for remote workers and freelancers. It is not a published blanket work permit for employment or services in the Thai market. Where the work involves a Thai employer, Thai clients, on-the-ground services or another Thailand-facing activity, the Department of Employment is the authority on work permission. The facts matter, so this page does not label every online activity lawful or unlawful.
The official Thai e-Visa portal was reopened on 1 August 2026, but its public content was script-locked in this verification environment. The earlier universal wording about where every applicant must be located could therefore not be re-confirmed from the portal this run. Applicants should use the instructions of the responsible Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate; no universal DTV processing time is stated here.
LTR Work-from-Thailand: a narrower employer test
The BOI LTR criteria are not based on income alone. As checked on 1 August 2026, Work-from-Thailand Professionals must have average personal income of at least USD 80,000 per year in the preceding 2 years. Applicants between USD 40,000 and USD 80,000 per year need a master's degree or higher in addition to the other criteria.
Under the same BOI criteria, as checked on 1 August 2026, the overseas employer must also be a listed public company or a qualifying private company with at least 3 years of operation and combined revenue of at least USD 50 million over the last 3 years, subject to BOI's detailed subsidiary rules. BOI also publishes health evidence of USD 50,000 insurance, Thai social security, or a USD 100,000 deposit maintained for at least 12 months.
As checked on 1 August 2026, after a complete and valid file is registered, BOI publishes a qualification-endorsement result within 20 working days, with longer handling possible when more documents are requested. The in-Thailand LTR issuance fee is 50,000 THB per person; overseas and e-Visa collection fees may differ. LTR provides an initial 5-year stay with another 5 years if qualifications remain met, annual rather than 90-day reporting, and no separate re-entry permit.
SMART Visa is now a startup-only programme
BOI Announcement Por. 5/2568, reopened in English and Thai on 1 August 2026, repealed the former multi-category framework and retained SMART only for qualifying startup entrepreneurs and their lawful dependants. The old SMART Talent comparison is therefore obsolete: ordinary remote work for an overseas business is not the current SMART route.
Reporting, extension and banking
- The Immigration Bureau's bilingual TM47 form and online manual were not retrievable during the 1 August 2026 check (403 responses), so the more-than-90-days reporting statement is retained as last confirmed on 30 July 2026, not freshly re-verified; see the verified reporting guide.
- The official MFA summary permits one DTV extension per entry but does not publish a Jomtien-specific guaranteed checklist or processing time. The local Immigration office decides the file.
- Thai bank account opening is a bank and branch decision. The old page's claim that named Pattaya banks universally open DTV accounts has been removed; see the verified banking guide.
Tax is separate from visa status
DTV does not publish a special tax exemption. The Revenue Department's current English and Thai foreign-income guides define residence under domestic law at an aggregate of 180 days or more in a calendar year, as checked on 1 August 2026. Actual assessability depends on the income, when it arose, remittance, treaty position and other facts. The old page's suggestion that keeping income abroad or transferring only living expenses automatically avoids tax was removed. See the verified tax guide; personal conclusions belong with a qualified tax professional.
