What it means

Amphoe (อำเภอ) is the Thai word for district — the second tier of the Thai administrative hierarchy, sitting below province (changwat) and above sub-district (tambon). Every address in Thailand falls within an amphoe, and this classification must appear on official documents including visa extension forms, TM30 accommodation reports, bank account opening forms, and civil registration documents. When Thai government forms ask for "district," they are asking for the amphoe. Understanding your correct amphoe is a small but important detail that causes disproportionate immigration paperwork rejections when it gets wrong.

Why it matters in Pattaya

Pattaya's administrative structure is genuinely confusing. Pattaya is a special autonomous municipality — not a standard amphoe-level settlement — within Banglamung Amphoe, Chonburi Province. The amphoe for virtually all Pattaya addresses (Central Pattaya, Jomtien, Naklua, Pratumnak, Wongamat, Na Kluea) is Banglamung. Writing "Pattaya" as the amphoe on Form TM7, TM30, or a Thai bank's address form is a common expat error that leads to document rejection at the counter. Officers cannot process forms with incorrect administrative data. For residents of Bang Saray, the relevant amphoe changes to Sattahip — a different district with a different officer code — requiring particular attention when completing address forms.
